- Spanish tomato variety descriptions since 2018

This variety is from the Basque Country. It's a variety created by Ion Couso Ureta from the neighborhood Algorta in the municipality Getxo.

He crossed a family heirloom and two other varieties together. The name of this variety was initially Iñigo, in honor of the peasant from which Ion received the family heirloom. When the cross have been stabilized,  Mr. Couso changed the name to Basajuan to avoid confusion with a another variety.

The name Basajuan (Lord of the Woods) refers to a character from the Basque and Aragonese mythology. A huge, hairy hominid dwelling in the woods.
